05. IMAGE EDITING IN GIMP

GIMP:- It is an
image editing software which is used for creating image as well as creating
animation also.
Ø GIMP
stands for GNU image manipulation program.
Ø There are various image editing software like: Adobe photoshop,Picasa,Paint.net,Adobe light room etc.
Ø In the process of image editing we can increase size,change the colour,creating layer,cropping an image,removal of unwanted elements etc.
Ø GIMP is freely distributed software which is used for image retouching and editing and can be download from the website “WWW.GIMP.ORG” .
Ø The first version of the GIMP as written by Peter Mattis and Spencer
Kimball.
v SOME BASIC TERMINOLOGY USED IN GIMP :-
i.
Image:- It is the basic object
or entry. It corresponds to a file such as: TIFF or JPEG file, PNG file, GIF
file etc.
ii.
Resolution:- It refers to the
sharpness or clearity of a picture on the screen.

It is used to display as
clearly by increasing it.
iii.
Pixels:- It is a collection of
multiple numbers of small dots. As we know that digital images are made up of
grid square elements called pixels.

A picture or figure on the
screen is formed by the combination of the pixels.
iv.
Selections:- It is a property that helps to
select a particular portion of image.
Ruler:- It is a tool which is used to determine coordinates
within the image.
Ø It displays below the image
menu towards the left of the image.
Ø The default unit for the
ruler is pixel and it is generally used to create guide.
Ø Guide is a line that helps
to accurately position objects.
Status
Area:- The status area shows the
status, that are already performed activity by the user.
Ø This area present at the
bottom of the image window and also it displays the original name of image
file. And, size of file by default.
Navigation
Control:- It is small cross shaped
at the lower right corner of the image display.
Ø Navigation window provides
a convenient way to quickly navigant around a large image.
Ø Navigation preview is a miniature
view of the image with the outline of the displayed area.
Image
display:- It is also known as convas.
Ø It is the central layout
that displays image and contents.
Ø It is surrounded by yellow
dotted line showing the image boundary.
Main Toolbox:-
Main
toolbox that contains various set of buttons or tools.
Ø It appears on the left sides
of GIMP window.
Ø By default it also contains
the option for background colors.
Tool
options:- It is looked below the main
toolbox.
ü NOTE:- Mask helps to protect
a particular area of an image where we cannot change any things related to
picture path.
§ How to create a new file ?
1)
First of all go to file option & select new option
and click on it.
2)
Select the size like: width & height as well as set
the templates size and also set the advance options like: x-resolution,
y-resolution, colors and type some comments.
3)
Finally click on ‘OK’ button.
ü NOTE:- File extension name of the GIMP file is
.xcf .When we want to save the file in other format like: GIF,PNG,PSD etc. then
the export feature of the GIMP can be used.
Tool box:- This box contains various tools by which we draw
different objects or images on the
canvas.
Ø There are various tools that exist on the
tool box :-

Pencil tool:- It is
used to draw a straight line & free hand drawing.
·
Rectangle select tool:- It is used to select or draw square rectangular regions
(areas).
·
Paint brush tool:- It is used to paint the image with colors on
canvas.
·
Bucket fill tool:- It is used to fill the color or pattern
within selected area.
·
Text tool:- It is
used to type text in horizontal as well as vertical direction.
·
Eraser tool:- It is used to erase the contents of the image
or other things.
·
Ellipse select tool:- It is
used to select or draw circular or elliptical pictures.
·
Blend tool:- It is used to fill the selected area with a
color gradient.
·
Move:- It is
used to change the position of the selected object or image.
·
Clone tool:- It is
used to copy particular color of the existing image & apply that to other
portion of image.
Ø It enables to identify as a simple from the
image.
·
Healing tool:- It is
used to rub the upper layer of an image & highlights the base designs or
color of the image.

Foreground and background color tool: -
It is used to change or set the foreground & background color
of the image.

How to set foreground and background color?
1)
First of all click on foreground & background color
tool.
2)
Set the foreground/background color in appear dialog box
& click on ‘OK’ button.
Additional effects: - There are some additional effect in GIMP that helps
to reshape or modify & existing pictures, texts etc.
Ø Destorts, Enhance, Noise etc are some
additional effect in GIMP.

How to apply additional effect?
1)
Go to filter and select desired effects like: destorts,
blur, enhance, generic etc.
I wrap:- It
enables to modify the shape of image by moving, whriling or shrinking the area
of an image.
§
How to set I wrap?
1)
First of all click on filter menu.
2)
Select I wrap option from destrots some menu & click
on it.
3)
Select any deform mode like: grow, shrink, remove etc and
also set the radius as well as deform amount.
4)
And finally click on ‘OK’ button.
GIMP is incredible in functioning and gives you flawless results. Adorned with power pack photo editing tools, it has an interface similar to Photoshop. Healing tools, custom brushes, clone stamps are ravishing tools in the toolbar. Selection of isolated areas and editing them to become perfect is what the application offers further.
